E-Liquid

E-liquid is what you refill a pod system or tank with. Two things determine whether a bottle suits your device and your habit: the type of nicotine, and the strength.

Salt nicotine or freebase

Salt nicotine is smoother at high strengths, absorbs quickly, and is what small pod systems and disposables use. It is the right choice if you are replacing cigarettes and want the hit to arrive fast. Freebase nicotine is harsher at the same strength, so it is sold at lower strengths — typically 3mg to 6mg — and used in larger, higher-power devices where you inhale much more vapour per puff.

Choosing a strength

As a general guide: a pack-a-day smoker usually starts at 50mg (5%) salt nicotine in a pod device; a lighter smoker at 20mg (2%). If you are using a bigger sub-ohm device, 3mg freebase is the common starting point — putting 50mg salt in a high-power device will make you ill. When in doubt, start lower. You can always vape a little more; you cannot undo too much nicotine.

PG and VG

Higher PG gives a sharper throat hit and carries flavour more distinctly, and suits small pod devices. Higher VG produces thicker vapour and is smoother, but is too viscous for some small coils to wick properly. Check what your device recommends before buying a high-VG bottle.
